- Influence (イ ン フ ル エ ン ス) is a 2021 Japanese drama made up of 5 episodes, about 50 minutes long each.
- The story begins when one of the main lead, now an adult, goes to a writer to tell her about the events experienced by her and her two peers during adolescence and early youth, in the hope that the woman will write a novel about them...
- 1980s: the three girls, Yuri (Hashimoto Kanna), Satoko (Yoshikawa Ai) and Maho (Aoi Wakana) have a home, a family, attend school, yet have no adults to rely on or to trust and to feel protected by.
- The "grown-ups" pretend not to see, they do not want their peaceful lives to be shaken, thus conditioning the girls' vision of the world, as well as their choices and their whole lives.
- Left alone in a world of unreliable adults, the three find themselves tied to each other by lies and murders, in the belief that the only way to solve injustices is to resort to extreme remedies ...
- Countless times the relationship between the girls is called "friendship", but to me it seems rather a prison, from which they cannot escape out of a sense of mutual duty, because no one would understand them, because, despite having a - bad - influence on each other, they have no choice.
- The three leading actresses are very talented, especially during the scenes set in the past, also believable for the setting (for once, the Japanese drama cinematography that often seems "old" to me, plays in favor of the story).
- The story has a fast pace and there are many plot twists and good cliffhangers, which kept me glued to the screen.
- The story deals with important issues, such as domestic violence, never being superficial, and manages to make people feel empathy towards the girls, despite not justifying their actions. Rather, one wonders with sadness what kind of life the three would have had, if only they had been less alone, less afraid.
