Let's talk briefly about... Rampant (English version)

Qui la versione in italiano.
This is my first attempt to translate a post in English. Sorry for the mistakes 🙈

  • Prince Lee Chung (Hyun Bin) returns to Joseon determined to leave for China after having fulfilled his deceased brother's last request. Once in his homeland, however, he will have to face a conspiracy and, unexpectedly, a real horde of zombies that threatens to destroy the country ...

  • Rampant is a 2018 South Korean film, directed by Kim Sung-hoon and written by Hwang Jo-yoon (Masquerade) and Won Sin-yun.
  • Although the story focuses on the zombies that bring death and destruction to Joseon, it is an action movie rather than a real horror one, but that is not a bad thing, as it can, in this way, also intercept that segment of the public that does not like bloody scenes, nor to jump from the chair, but that does not disdain a zombie story.
  • The increase in number of  the creatures and the more and more desperate situation in which the survivors find themselves is however able to create a good tension in the viewer.
  • The movie is undoubtedly very good regarding settings and costumes, and does not spare on extras, so it is visually very rich and pleasant.
  • What is missing is a psychological deepening of the characters, who are rather stereotyped and two-dimensional. A glaring wasted opportunity is that of the concubine Jo played by Seo Ji-hye, unfortunately only sketchy, who could be a very interesting character.
  • About the acting, Hyun Bin does not convince for most of the story, especially at the beginning, when he  does not succeed very well in playing the part of the indolent prince. Instead, he improves during the final scenes, as the unexpected savior of his people and the whole country.
  • About the ending [warning: SPOILER], it would have been very impactful if Prince Lee Chung had died next to the drum, overwhelmed by zombies after sacrificing himself for the others. I do not hide, however, that I was pleased to see him incredibly able to get out of a hopeless situation, thanks to some unlikely short flights.
  • There are, however, some emotionally charged scenes, thanks to some predictable but no less effective deaths.

  • Rampant is a good movie that gives its best in action scenes and in showing the almost inevitability of the spread of a disease, which reminds us so much of the current situation, but that manages to leave us with the hope that, in the end, everything will be really ok.
